Welcome to National Pig Day

I still have one !

Who doesn't love pigs?
Such cute animals and I am sure most of us had, or still have a piggy money box.

This day was created in 1972 by two Sisters in North Carolina who recognised the importance of these animals and to acknowledge these most intellectual animals.

Today is not a day to think of bacon sandwiches or anything else, but just to acknowledge these wonderful animals .

Pigs have been around since prehistoric times and played a big part in our lives. Their history stretches back nearly as far as the domestic dog. There are a lot of different breeds of Pigs as well, and here are a few.

Most of us will have seen Babe and the follow on Pig in the City and know Wilbur from Charlotte's Web. All so very cute and clever, and believe me Pigs are!

They are so cute. Often the Mother is kept away from them, but they are able to feed to stop her laying on them and killing them.

Some of you may have seen pigs on a farm or in a field.
When I was a child there was a zoo at Crystal Palace that had all sorts of cute animals that we could go and see feed and stroke.

Apart from farms around here, there is a Nature Park, that has a zoo of sorts and you can wander around it.
I made the mistake once of picking up a piglet. OMG I thought I had hurt it, the noise it made was frightening. He did not want to be handled!

And of course the flying pig

They are becoming increasing popular as pets, something I am not sure I agree with, although they are great fun to watch but like a lot of pets than go in and out of fashion, these could well be one of them

Here are some facts about pigs.

They are very clean animals, yes they roll in mud, what animal doesn't, but they don't go to the toilet where they sleep and often bath in water to remove sweat.

They are very intelligent animals. Evidence of this goes back to 1772 when a trained pig entertained crowds by counting, telling the time and performing some clever tricks

You can eat every part of a pig apart from its squeak

They are the perfect way to get rid of a body, nothing is left.

How to celebrate today? Well, you could adopt a pig from a rescue centre for a start or even learn something about these fine animals. Or even sit down with a nice sandwich that isn't pig-originated, and watch Babe and the follow on, Pig in the City followed by Winnie The Pooh and Piglet.

The words from Charlotte the Spider sum them up. They are terrific, radiant and humble, so just give some thought today to these really cute and lovely animals.

All are welcome.
And please feel free to share all discussions you enjoy.
